American Idol favorite Chris Daughtry has declined an offer to become the lead singer for the multiplatinum rock band Fuel, he said.

"I'm going to be doing my own thing," Daughtry, a 26-year-old from McLeansville, N.C., told The Charlotte Observer on Saturday.

The band had offered Daughtry the job only hours after his elimination from the FOX show last month. Bass player Jeff Abercrombie and guitarist Carl Bell told the TV show Extra that Daughtry was invited to replace singer Brett Scallions, who quit in February.

Daughtry said he expects to announce his next career move in a few months, most likely after this summer's American Idol concert tour ends.

He told The Charlotte Observer he'd met with entertainment executives last week in New York and seen a Pearl Jam concert.

Shortly after being voted off Idol, Daughtry told PEOPLE about the offer from Fuel, "They're good friends of mine, and right now I'm just thinking everything through and making sure that I make the right decision for me and my family. Those things take time."

I was kind of hoping he would. I listened to his band online http://www.absentelement.com & really like their sound. Maybe they all will get signed somewhere?

Dude... that was the stupidest thing he could have done. Maybe it was his wife who objected, but still..

AI can kill a music career too. They get stuck with the label. Take the offer, do it for awhile make an album and an assload of cash, be known as something else other than the guy from american idol... then make your break into your own thing.

I read that yesterday too. Not sure his reasoning behind it...but time will tell.
